The Listeners

On an ordinary day Claire hears a low, rumbling sound. This innocuous noise starts to cause Claire migraines, nosebleeds, insomnia and even visions. No obvious source or medical cause can be found – and no-one else can hear it. Though her husband Paul, daughter Ashley, and friends try to be supportive, they struggle to understand what Claire is going through.  Feeling increasingly isolated, Claire is approached by a student of hers, Kyle, who tells Claire he can also hear the sound. 

Claire and Kyle start to secretly investigate the noise’s source outside and Kyle finds a group of people who purport to also hear the noise - Claire agrees to attend a meeting with him. The group is run by Omar and Jo. Claire is freaked out when she hears that some have been hearing “The Hum” for years. When Paul and Ashley attend a meeting without Kyle, Jo inadvertently reveals to Ashley that Kyle is also an attendee. In a fumbled effort to protect her mum she texts Kyle to stop seeing Claire, but Kyle's mother Siobhan sees the texts….

Despite Paul’s demand that Claire quit the group, she finds herself adrift without them. Omar and Jo introduce more intense practice around The Hum. Jo leads the group in sessions to listen to The Hum more fully. This practice is revelatory for everyone in the group, except for Claire. Omar and Jo tell her she needs to stop fighting The Hum or she’ll always struggle with the negative symptoms it brings. When two former members of The Hum group turn up at Claire’s house, they make claims about Omar’s past which Ashley investigates.

Ashley confronts Claire about Omar’s past. Isolated, the effects of the Hum surge to unbearable levels for Claire she protests that she’s been unfairly treated by Ashley and Paul. Claire’s paranoia takes an even darker turn and she calls Kyle, she’s ready to embrace The Hum. Claire returns to Jo and Omar’s to tell them what she’s done. Claire joins the group again for a session - visions that before seemed disturbing are now inviting.  However, Siobhan seeks out Paul and Ashley, forcing them to follow her to Jo and Omar’s house.

Siobhan turns up at Jo and Omar’s house with Ashley and Paul, demanding they send Kyle out. When the group refuse to cooperate, Siobhan calls the police. New group member Noam is disturbed by the group’s reluctance to de-escalate and when he tries to leave, he finds his exit blocked. As he finally makes his way out of the house, the police call for backup. The group decide to listen together one last time. As the police burst through the house, tragic consequences ensue…
