A bold and curious young woman in her early '20s, Anna sails to New Zealand in order to make a living on the goldfields, only to be swindled the moment she steps off the boat. Her swindlers, notorious entrepreneur Lydia Wells and ex-convict Francis Carver, have laid an elaborate plot to make an illicit fortune of their own. When this plot goes disastrously awry, Anna escapes to the gold town of Hokitika and tries to put the episode behind her. However, she has developed an opium addiction, and is forced into prostitution in order to cover her debts.
